About Sooke
Climate
Located within a temperate rainforest region, Sooke has a moderate climate year-round with warm, dry summers and mild, rainy winters; snow is rare and short-lived.
Economy
Since the 1850s, Sooke’s economy has since shifted from a base in fishing, logging, and mining to tourism, recreation, and professional services including many home-based businesses. The Sooke Harbour Chamber of Commerce supports community activities and provides many business opportunities.
Recreation
Sooke’s year-round mild climate allows people to enjoy many outdoor recreational activities such as the Par 3 DeMamiel Golf Course, Whiffin Spit Park, Sooke Potholes, Galloping Goose Trail, and other parks for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding. Marinas serve those looking to get out on the water with fishing charters, whale watching, and kayaking.
The SEAPARC Recreation Centre (pool, arena, and fitness centre) and the Sooke Region Museum (with visitor info centre) offer indoor activities year-round.
Sooke is also the gateway to adventures beyond, such as the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail and West Coast Trail. Scenic photography is an enjoyable activity in this seaside region.
Arts & Culture
Sooke’s vibrant arts community features talented artists and craftspeople in both home studios and galleries in the commercial core. Musicians of every genre, from folk to symphonic, perform at a variety of events, sharing the limelight with an enthusiastic theatre community.
Food & Drink
Sooke has several coffee shops, local craft breweries, and renowned local restaurants that attract diners from around the island. The Sooke Country Market and Sooke Night Market offer fresh farm produce and artisan goods throughout summer.
Volunteerism
Sooke’s strong volunteer spirit pulls residents together for numerous annual events such as the Rotary Auction, Sooke Canada Day, Sooke Fine Arts Show, Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra Fling, and Sooke Fall Fair. Hundreds of residents volunteer their time and skills with dozens of community groups.
